I now know where I hope to be on August 7 next year: on the beach at Weymouth in Dorset, watching Ben Ainslie glide into history as not just Britain’s, but the world’s best Olympic sailor. I should be in good company on the sand because the man I shall be cheering on tells me that his parents, Roddy and Sue, will be outside the official event site in Weymouth Bay too – as they don’t have tickets either.
On Tuesday, Ainslie, 34 – who has an extraordinary Olympic record of one silver and three gold medals – and his fellow sailors had the honour of becoming the first athletes to be officially named in Team GB’s line-up. Ainslie will represent Britain in the Finn class, one of 10 sailing events.
Meanwhile, Weymouth’s killjoy council, “protecting the interests of ticket holders”, is apparently building a wall and banning the public from Nothe Gardens, the park overlooking the course. “But don’t worry,” Ainslie says. “Go to the beach. There will be plenty of room and you can watch it all while having an ice cream.”
