Day 3: World Match Racing Tour - Match Race Sweden
Ben Ainslie and Team Origin are ready for the semi finals of Match Race Sweden after three straight wins against Mathieu Richard in the Quarter Finals.
After the Robin Round there were eight skippers left in the competition. For the Quarter Final the skippers have chosen their opponent in the order of the ranking list.
The results of the picking are:
Jesper Radich – Francesco Bruni
Ian Williams – Magnus Holmberg
Mathieu Richard – Ben Ainsle
Torvar Mirsky – Damien Ieh
The Quarter Final started today with light and steady wind. The teams compete to be best out of three races to qualify to the semi finals.
There were two almost identical races in the first flight of the day. In the match against Ben Ainslie, Mathieu Richard received a penalty in the start. So did also Francesco Bruni when dueling Jesper Radich. Both Richard and Bruni took the lead in the last downwind and tried to take their 360 turns penalties respectively, but they both failed and Ben Ainsle and Jesper Radich could win their matches. The only Swedish skipper in the Quarter Finals, Magnus Holmberg, failed to get a point against Ian Williams who lead the whole first race. Holmberg even got a penalty which he took on the finish line.
Magnus Holmberg stood for the most impressive comeback so far in this year’s Stena Match Cup Sweden. Holmberg was four boat lengths behind Williams at the first rounding but gained on his opponent from then on. He chose line close to the cliffs and was finally able to pass him on the third leg giving him a short lead and victory in the race. Holmberg now has a good shot at joining Ainslie to the semi finals.
Ben Ainslie 3 Mathieu Richard 0
Damien Iehl 1 Torvar Mirsky 2
Magnus Holmberg 2 Ian Williams 1
Francesco Bruni 1 Jesper Radich 2
